The 10th Annual Chinese Lantern Festival runs from Thursday, July 20 to Sunday, October 1: Ontario Place. July 20 September 4, 2006 September 7 October 1, 2006 To quote from the Web site: "The Chinese Lantern Festival has 30 grand scale lantern installations that are only lit up at night. There is a Chinese marketplace where visitors can barter for authentic Chinese handicrafts and goods. The Chinese marketplace also has authentic Chinese food including Bubble Tea and Dim Sum. The Cinesphere shows Chinese themed movies three times an evening throughout the festival. The Toronto Star stage has nightly entertainment including, Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, Martial Arts, a Chinese Ensemble, Chinese Dance and Tai Chi demonstrations." The Temple of Heaven is the logo of the festival. It was built in 1420 was used by the Ming and Qing dynasty emperors of for worshiping heaven, and praying for a good harvest. Moon Cakes are traditionally eaten during the lantern festival. These round cakes made from lotus paste and egg yolks. Typically the lanterns are red globes, but may have pictorial scenes or they may be shaped as dragons, butterflies, birds, peaches, or dinosaurs . Chinese Marketplace The "essence of a Beijing market" is recreated at the Chinese Marketplace, where you can enjoy a variety of Chinese cuisine and bargain for handicrafts. Entertainment Stage Enjoy nightly entertainment on the main stage, including the dragon dance and traditional dance and music from local acts and performing groups direct from China!
